How to Answer "What is Your Greatest Weakness?"
This is the most feared interview question " — but it doesn't have to be. Here's how to answer honestly without killing your chances.
The Formula
- State a real weakness (not "I work too hard")
- Show self-awareness " — explain how you recognized it
- Demonstrate growth " — what you're doing to improve
Good Examples That Work
| Weakness | Why It Works | Example Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Public speaking | Common, honest, improvable | "I joined Toastmasters and now present at team meetings" |
| Delegation | Shows you're a doer | "I'm learning to trust my team more and focus on leadership" |
| Overthinking | Shows thoughtfulness | "I set deadlines for decisions to avoid analysis paralysis" |
| Saying no | Shows you're a team player | "I'm learning to prioritize and protect my time" |
Weaknesses to NEVER Say
- "I'm a perfectionist" " — everyone says this, they don't believe it
- "I work too hard" " — obvious deflection
- "I'm too detail-oriented" " — same as perfectionist
- "I have no weaknesses" " — instant rejection
- Anything about the job's core requirement " — don't say you're bad at what they're hiring for
The STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Describe the situation, explain the task, share the action you took, and show the positive result. This turns a weakness into evidence of growth.
⚠️ Don't do this:
- Don't pick a fake weakness " — interviewers see through it immediately
- Don't pick a strength disguised as a weakness " — it's obvious
- Don't say "I don't have any weaknesses" " — nobody believes that
- Don't ramble " — keep your answer to 60-90 seconds
The bottom line: Pick a real weakness you've actively worked on. Show growth with specific actions and results. Keep your answer under90 seconds. The goal isn't to be perfect " — it's to show self-awareness and a commitment to improvement.
