The 4 Steps to Writing a Check

Step 1: Date (Top Right)

  • Write the current date in MM/DD/YYYY format
  • Never post-date a check unless you have an agreement with the recipient
  • A check is valid for 6 months from the date written

Step 2: Pay To The Order Of (Center Line)

  • Write the full legal name of the person or company
  • For individuals: "John A. Smith" (not just "John")
  • For businesses: "ABC Plumbing LLC" (exactly as registered)
  • Never leave this line blank " — a blank check is as good as cash to anyone

Step 3: Dollar Amount (Box and Line)

  • Numeric box (right): Write $150.00
  • Written line (center): Write "One hundred fifty dollars and 00/100"
