💡 How-To
How to Tie Your Shoes So They Never Come Untied
Tired of your shoelaces coming untied mid-day? The problem isn't your laces " — it's your knot. Here's the secure method that stays tied all day.
Why Your Knots Come Untied
Most people tie what's called a "granny knot" " — where the loops go up and down instead of side to side. This creates a weak knot that loosens with every step. The fix is simple: change how you cross the laces.
The Secure Method (Ian Knot)
- Cross the laces right over left, tie a simple knot
- Make a loop with the right lace (the "tree")
- Wrap the left lace around the loop (the "rabbit goes around the tree")
- Push through to form the second loop
- Pull both loops tight " — the bow should sit horizontally across the shoe
The Double-Knot Trick
If you want extra security (for running, hiking, or kids):
- Tie your normal bow
- Tie the two loops together in another simple knot
- This creates a double knot that virtually never comes undone
Knot Types Compared
| Knot Type | Stays Tied? | Easy to Untie? | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Granny Knot | 🏥 No | ✅ Yes | Nothing " — avoid |
| Reef Knot | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | Daily wear |
| Ian Knot | ✅✅ Very | ✅ Yes | All shoes |
| Double Knot | ✅✅✅ | ⚠️ Harder | Running, kids |
The wax trick: For laces that slip out of bows, rub them with a candle or bar of soap. The wax adds friction and helps the knot hold. Works great on nylon or silk laces.
⚠️ What NOT to do:
- Don't tie too tight " — it cuts circulation and makes untying hard
- Don't use overly long laces " — excess length makes loops heavy and floppy
- Don't ignore frayed laces " — they slip more easily
- Don't double-knot dress shoes " — it looks sloppy
The bottom line: If your shoes keep coming untied, you're probably tying a granny knot. Switch to the Ian knot (loops go side to side) and your laces will stay tied all day. For kids or athletes, add a double knot for bulletproof security.
