iPads are powerful, but can they replace a laptop? Here's when to buy each and which saves you money.

Buy an iPad If...

  • You already have a desktop computer
  • You mainly consume content (reading, streaming)
  • You need extreme portability
  • Budget is under $700

Buy a Laptop If...

  • It's your only computer
  • You need full desktop software (Excel, Photoshop, coding)
  • You type a lot (essays, reports, code)
  • You need multiple windows open simultaneously
The hidden cost: iPad + Magic Keyboard ($300) + Apple Pencil ($130) = $1,030+. That's more than a MacBook Air ($1,099) that does everything a laptop can do. Unless you specifically need tablet features, a laptop is usually the better value.
The bottom line: iPad for secondary device + content consumption. Laptop for primary computer + productivity. If you can only buy one, get a laptop. iPad + accessories cost as much as a MacBook Air but can't replace it.
