How to Clean Grout and Restore Bathroom Tile
Dirty grout makes even new tile look old and grimy. Replacing grout costs $500-2,000, but you can restore it to near-white condition for under $10 using household products. Here are the most effective methods.
Method 1: Baking Soda + Hydrogen Peroxide (Best Overall)
- Mix 1/2 cup baking soda + 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide + 1 tsp dish soap into a paste
- Apply paste to grout lines with a small brush (old toothbrush works perfectly)
- Let sit 10-15 minutes
- Scrub vigorously with the brush
- Rinse with warm water
Works on: 80% of grout stains. Safe for all tile types. Cost: under $5.
Method 2: Oxygen Bleach (For Tough Stains)
- Mix OxiClean or oxygen bleach powder with warm water (follow package directions)
- Apply to grout and let sit 15-30 minutes
- Scrub with stiff brush
- Rinse thoroughly
Works on: Mold, mildew, deep-set stains. More powerful than chlorine bleach without the harsh fumes.
Method 3: Steam Cleaning (No Chemicals)
A handheld steam cleaner ($30-60) blasts dirt out of grout with high-temperature steam. No chemicals needed " — just water vapor. Particularly effective for mold and mildew in shower grout.
Method 4: Grout Pen (Instant Whitening)
After cleaning, a grout pen ($8-12) paints over remaining discoloration. It's essentially a paint marker for grout lines. Provides instant visible improvement even if deep stains remain.
Preventing Dirty Grout
- Seal the grout: Apply grout sealer every 1-2 years. It prevents stains from penetrating and makes cleaning easier. ($10-15 for a bottle that covers 100+ sq ft.)
- Squeegee after every shower: Removes water and soap before it settles into grout
- Ventilate: Run the bathroom fan during and 30 minutes after showers to reduce moisture
- Clean weekly: Quick spray of daily shower cleaner prevents buildup
- Bleach breaks down grout over time, causing it to crack and crumble
- It can discolor colored grout permanently
- Oxygen bleach (OxiClean) is equally effective and much safer for grout
